Reply from Ken Livingstone's Office
Dear Karl Adaway,
Thank you for your letter to the Mayor, Ken Livingstone, raising your
concerns about the proposed closure of the Henderson hospital in Sutton.
I apologise for the delay in responding. Please accept my reply on
behalf of the Mayor.
The Mayor fully understands any anxieties people may have about plans
for changes to local NHS services. In his response to Lord Darzi's
review of health services in London the Mayor called on the NHS to ensure
that any proposed changes to existing hospital services do not threaten
either the quality or accessibility of healthcare for Londoners, and to
endorse the principal that new better quality of services should be up
and running before any services they replace are withdrawn. The Mayor
is also of the view that mental health needs to be more comprehensively
embedded throughout Healthcare for London as it is further developed
and, in particular, that commissioning plans should set out how mental
health services will be integrated with new models of healthcare.
Unfortunately, the Mayor has no direct responsibility for NHS services
or for the management and deployment of NHS resources. He is therefore
not in a position to get involved in detailed consideration of local
decisions about the delivery of mental health services.
However the Mayor will continue to have discussions with NHS London
about the implementation of Healthcare for London and will seek to ensure
that any reconfiguration of mental health services in the capital does
not adversely affect local provision.
Yours sincerely,
Grant Pettitt
